POVERTY AND SLUMS GROWING BY MILLIONS WORLDWIDE

In my lifetime on a bicycle traveling through dozens of third world countries, I cannot begin to describe the human predicament witnessed by my own eyes. Painful! At first, I suffered depression, but after see so much poverty, death and visual horrors, I steeled myself against the emotional pain, and finally realized the futility of it—and kept pedaling my bike. In a recent report by the United Nations, “The Real Truth - UN Report: World’s Slums Growing,” March 26, 2010—they exposed what I witnessed personally.

“The world’s rapidly increasing slums are becoming a social “time bomb” ready to explode, a United Nations report suggests,” a UN spokesperson said. “Despite the efforts of member nations, the number of persons living in slums increased from 776.7 million in 2000 to some 827.6 million in 2010.

“Short of drastic action,” the latest UN Habitat report says, “the world slum population will probably grow by six million each year (or another 61 million people) to hit a total of 889 million by 2020.”

While the report said that slums in China and India slowed somewhat through the past 10 years, don’t believe it!  India grows by 12 to 14 million added people annually. They practice no birth control. China, with its one child family quota, continues adding eight million annually with a phenomenon known as ‘population momentum’.  When a population becomes so large, it imitates a speeding train with no brakes. Both countries will reach over 1.5 billion in 40 years.

As it stands, India suffers over one million citizens that take their morning constitutional in the woods, in their yards, in the streets every day because they lack toilets or public restrooms.  A horrifying 1,000 Indian children die of dysentery, diarrhea and other water borne diseases DAILY!   With an additional 12 to 14 million citizens added annually, they cannot solve even their basic needs for hygiene.

“The Washington Post reported that, “An alarming trend highlighted by the report is that of ‘refugee cities’—mostly the result of war and violent conflict.  Developing nations house 70 percent of the total refugee population. In Amman, Jordan, one in four inhabitants are displaced persons.”

They would be wrong!  Their grinding problems stem from lack of birth control and family planning. As they add sheer human numbers, they cannot address simple human dignity such as a toilet, shower, bed and shelter.

I attended a speech by Arun Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and he said, “In India, over four million citizens are born in the streets and die in the streets without ever having taken a shower, used a toilet or slept in a bed.”

“Conditions are especially dire in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, as impoverished people are often driven off their farmland into metropolitan areas,” said the UN spokesperson. “In many cases, slum dwellers are forced into poorly built high-rise apartments, thereby freeing up urban areas for condominiums and commercial construction. This often leads to overcrowding and inhumane living conditions, which in turn have caused a steep increase in diabetes, obesity and HIV infections among slum dwellers.”

Unfortunately, Africa, now standing at 767 million, expects to grow to 1.4 billion within 40 years.  Again, no birth control or family planning other than what Mother Nature provides in starvation and human suffering leading to short, miserable and terrible lives.

If any of us, no matter what our race, creed or color might be, refuse to engage our U.S. Congress as we have not for 30 years as to the population/immigration equation—our children will find themselves living in a terribly degraded America where the American Dream will be described by the history books as a ‘fleeting fantasy’ from the era of 1950 to 2010.  These are several of the top organizations where you can take collective action to change the course of American history as well as in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.
