Most Americans feel frustrated beyond comprehension at their powerlessness against the U.S. Congress for not enforcing the laws on the books.  Over 20 million Americans cannot find a job. Another 35 million Americans subsist on food stamps. Another 1.5 million Americans live homeless on the streets of America. Countless millions lost their homes to foreclosures.  All because they lost their jobs!

Yet, the U.S. Congress allows over eight to ten million illegal aliens a daily job because ICE fails to enforce immigration laws internally.  For show, ICE stages one raid in a blue moon! 

Vicki Martin, Clearfield, Utah, said, “During the ICE raid on SWIFT meatpacking company, we saw the mayhem resulting from a business relying on the antiquated paper documents mandated by the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. These documents are easily forged; a woman in the Hyrum area was found to have counterfeited and sold hundreds of the documents allowing illegal aliens to steal American jobs.

“The Department of Homeland Security devised an electronic system whereby ALL employers can check ALL job applicants for their work legality. This E-VERIFY system is free, quick, and 99.8% accurate. Arizona, Oklahoma, and a few other states require ALL job applicants be verified through E-VERIFY. They are seeing illegal aliens leave their jurisdictions for home or for areas not requiring this procedure. Since Utah has lost 85,000 jobs in the last two years we NEED the jobs this procedure will free up....especially the low skill entry level jobs for teens (25% unemployed), blacks (15.1%), American Hispanics 13%). “Utah has about 125,000 illegal aliens costing us over $244 Million yearly in social services including (legislative audit) $85 Million to educate illegal alien children and $6 Million to incarcerate criminals with ICE retainers.

“Harvard economist George Borjas estimates competition from foreigners costs each average working American $1,700 yearly in un-received earnings. These "unmet taxes" that our state does not receive from citizen lower wages contribute to the present budget crisis.

“We presently have a "perfect economic storm" in Utah tax finances, high unemployment, lower wages for working Utahns paying lower taxes, and millions of dollars demanded by illegal aliens for services while their "under the table" earnings are sent home. Utah Legislature must cut the Gordian knot -- require E-VERIFY be used for ALL EMPLOYEES.”


Robert Kennedy, Cameron, MT, said, “We have been reading all the latest news in the local and in DC papers on the rise and fall of a "Job's Bill." But, what we had observed in this "son of stimulus" is just that — much of the same non-job producing ideas with more deficit spending in order to get bipartisan votes. Maybe we're wrong, but we thought the majority of voters told these DC prima donnas to stop this wasteful spending. We disagree with our three members of Congress who support earmarks, pet projects, or sweeteners. If a bill can't pass on its own merits then maybe it's not worth passing. But will anyone listen?

“One no-cost idea which we have not heard because of its political volatility is: Start giving the jobs taken by immigrants, whether legal or illegal, back to US citizens. We are paying unemployment to millions of US citizens while we have millions of immigrants working. Isn't it time to address this situation? Should we be able to choose when we need more immigrant labor and who that labor might be?  Yet many in Congress completely ignore this solution to a social issue that needs addressing. When will they finally get the political courage to say we need to put the brakes on immigration?”

Kathleene Parker, Rio Rancho, NM, said, “You are right to look at the effect of outsourcing, but shouldn’t you also look at immigration?  During the Great Depression, leaders, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, insisted that immigration be kept below 20,000 legal immigrants a year. During today’s Great Recession, leaders of both parties studiously ignore the elephant in the room: the highest immigration rates in our history!

“Legal immigration hovers at roughly 700,000 a year, higher even than the 600,000-a-year average of the previous high, the Great Wave between 1880 and 1920. Add an estimated half-million illegal immigrants, and immigration hovers close to two times the previous high. We must, one assumes, create more than 100,000 jobs a month just to accommodate arriving immigrants who need work. One is reminded of the adage about the importance of turning off the faucet before mopping the floor!”  Kathleen Parker serves on the board of advisers for Population-Environment Balance, a national group advocating for population/immigration stabilization.
