San Francisco has been named the most expensive US city for commuters as a new study shows residents spend $12,650 annually - nearly $50 a day - on travel.

New research from business website Chamber of Commerce found that San Francisco's costs are more than double the national average of $5,478.

Additionally, the average commuter in San Francisco also spends 58.4 minutes on every day to get in and out of the city, one of the longest commutes in the U.S.

'When I lived in Oakland and commuted to work in San Francisco, my trip was ninety minutes each way on public transit,' one person on social media shared.

An expensive commute and long travel times are just two of the latest reasons the city has become a ghost town in recent years.

San Francisco and other Bay Area cities have been plagued by a rise in crime, homelessness, and drug use as politicians have seemingly turned a blind eye.

While the city has the most expensive yearly commute, San Francisco has the third highest median income on the list of the 25 cities with the costliest commute.

The median earnings for residents in the area is $103,978.

The number two spot on the list of costliest commutes went to Fremont, California, another Bay Area city. Yearly, Fremont commuters spend $12,048.

Fremont had the second highest median income on the list at $104,768 while Sunnyvale had the highest median at $125,504.

Sunnyvale took the number eight spot on the list but commuters still spent a whopping $10,354 annually - or $39.82 per day.
