Nancy Pelosi claims calls for Dianne Feinstein, 89, to resign are SEXIST:

Nancy Pelosi has blasted calls for Dianne Feinstein to resign as sexist.

Democrats are scrambling to fill the California senator's seat on the powerful Judiciary committee after she asked to be temporarily replaced, amid a prolonged absence on Capital Hill due to shingles.

Two male House Democrats demanded she resign, but Pelosi, the speaker emeritus, defended her fellow lawmaker.

'Senator Feinstein has been a champion for California for 20 years,' Pelosi told CBS News. 'She deserves that respect to get well and be back on duty.

'It's interesting to me. I don't know what political agendas are at work that are going after Senator Feinstein in that way. I've never seen them go after a man who was sick in the Senate in that way,' she added.

Feinstein, 89, has spent nearly two months away from the Capitol recovering from shingles.

Her absence, combined with Senator John Fetterman's hospital stay, has proven problematic for Democrats, whose tight majority makes it difficult to pass legislation or confirm President Joe Biden's appointees without all their lawmakers present.

The California senator has missed nearly 60 votes since her shingles diagnosis in mid-February.

But there have been male senators who served to an advanced age and amid questions about their health, including Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. Bryd died in office and Thurmond retired after he became the only lawmaker to reach the age of 100 in office.
