'It took a tremendous toll': Bakery owner says it's 'bittersweet' after Oberlin

• https://www.dailymail.co, By SOPHIE MANN

The owner of Gibson's Bakery has spoken out after her business was awarded a $36 million settlement from Oberlin College after being falsely accused of racism by the progressive institution.

On Fox News, owner Lorna Gibson called the financial victory 'bittersweet' after both her father and husband died during the process of the legal battle around the incident.

In November 2016, an employee of the bakery who was also a family member, tackled a black student who was suspected of stealing a bottle of wine. The incident became physical, involving two of the students friends, all three of whom were ultimately arrested. Each went on to plead guilty.

Following the incident, the Oberlin student body and administration took action against the bakery they perceived to be racist, including instructing its campus food provider to stop buying goods from the shop, hurting the bakery's profits.

The altercation sparked protests outside Gibson's Bakery, where students and administrators (including a vice president and dean of students) handed out flyers that accused the bakery of a long track record of racial profiling and discrimination.

The protests and accusations of racism also occurred in the direct aftermath of the 2016 election of Donald Trump, which ignited waves of social justice-oriented demonstrations across the nation.

The Oberlin College Student resolution condemning the family owners of the bakery was emailed to all students and posted in a display case at the campus student centers, where it remained for a year.

In cases with that don't award much or any money, a judge might make his decision based on his feelings, knowing that nobody will ask for "conclusions of fact, or decisions of law." But when the case involves a load of money like this one, we should get a copy of the case, at least the lawsuit and the judge's conclusions of fact and decisions of law. Why? If we don't have something that bugs us right now, we might in the future, and will want to know what we need to do to create and win a lawsuit of our own.
