EDMONTON—Alberta has fired a shot across the bow of the federal government in the contentious debate over its proposed firearms restrictions as tensions ratchet up between the province and Ottawa.

The province — a loud critic of federal Bill C-21, which is proposing to usher in sweeping bans that detractors say will affect hunting rifles and firearms used for target shooting — says it's taking jurisdiction around firearms away from Ottawa.
