Democratic state senator sues DPS to get records on Uvalde shooting

The lawsuit, filed in state District Court in Travis County, said it is time to provide answers for Uvalde residents who lost a loved one in the May 24 shooting that killed 19 students and two teachers.

"To date, they have been met with lies, misstatements, and shifts of blame," the lawsuit said. "The State of Texas failed these families, and those families deserve to know the complete, unalterable truth about what happened that day."

Citing the state's open records law, Gutierrez on May 30 asked the DPS to provide ballistics reports and documents detailing the law enforcement response to the attack.

The senator's lawsuit argues that the DPS did not provide the documents, or seek an attorney general's opinion about withholding the records, within 10 business days as required under state law. As a result, the lawsuit argues, the department is required to provide the documents.
