Chinese 'Fight Club' No Longer Ends In Arrests Following Backlash

Users of Tencent Holdings video-streaming service can once again watch Edward Norton holding hands with Helena Bonham Carter as Project Mayhem culminates in a symphony of explosions, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Fincher's original film, which stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter, ends with the narrator (Norton) killing off his imaginary alter ego, Tyler Durden (Pitt), and then watching as buildings explode across a city skyline, suggesting that his anarchist crusade to take down consumerist society has begun.

Tencent sparked outrage and ridicule after replacing the explosion scene with a note at the end which said that police prevented the explosions, arrested Norton's character, and sent him to a lunatic asylum until his release in 2012.

"The police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding. After the trial, Tyler was sent to a lunatic asylum receiving psychological treatment," reads the censored version.

Interestingly, Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk praised China's censored ending as having been closer to the 1996 book's original ending - calling the edit "SUPER wonderful," and exclaiming that "Everyone gets a happy ending in China!"

That said, Palahniuk did note in his most recent Substack post that China did the "right thing" by restoring the original ending (and he's challenged Sen. Ted Cruz to allow all of his books in Texas schools and prisons.
