APPLE staffers are openly revolting over the tech-giant's plans to scan iPhones for child abuse images - amid fears users' privacy could be compromised.

More than 800 messages on Apple's internal communications network sounded off on the company's development of new technology that can scan a device remotely to detect pictures of sex abuse.

After Apple announced it was altering its security capabilities to probe customers' photos, workers came in droves over the internal chat app to air their protests.

Many of the workers expressed concerns that such a feature could be exploited by hardline government regimes seeking proof to censor or arrest, some anonymous employees told Reuters.

Some feared that the company - known for protecting consumer privacy -was blemishing its hard-earned reputation. 

Thousands have already signed a petition demanding that the tech giant halt plans amid worries it could pose a security risk.

The staffers' gripes challenged the company's photo-scanning technology for various devices, primarily iPhones and computers.

Some believe the scanning tech could lead toward complete encryption of the company's iCloud accounts for those who opt for it, according to Reuters.
