Since taking office earlier this month, Gascon has begun implementing policies that include ending cash bail, preventing prosecutors from seeking the death penalty, and reducing sentencing for crimes such as using a gun for criminal purposes or belonging to a gang.

When Gascon was confronted by the family of a 2015 murder victim, Joshua Rodriguez, about his intention to drop punishment sought against Rodriguez's killers, he was caught on video saying: "It's unfortunate that we have people who do not have enough education so they can keep their mouth shut for a moment so we can talk."
