Some students at Hofstra University in Long Island, NY are demanding the school remove a statue of founding father Thomas Jefferson from campus.

Last week, students held their second annual gathering, "Jefferson's Gotta Go!" on campus to"expose the culture of bias and discrimination," and to demand the removal of the statue.

Campus reform reports: The statue has been the center of controversy on the campus and has been defaced with "DECOLONIZE" and "Black Lives Matter" signs and stickers. According to a media advisory sent by the Jefferson Has Gotta Go (JGG) campaign, the protest was held at Hofstra Breslin Hall. Organizers included "students of Hofstra University, staff from Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, and supporters of Hempstead community."

Students first protested the statue last year, and the university's president announced the statue would stay on campus and that he would create a task force "to consider further dialogue and education about our founding fathers, the Atlantic slave trade and Western expansion; to think about what freedom and equality mean at the University."

Richard Caldwell, a history major at Hofstra joined Fox and Friends today to defend the statue.

"Thomas Jefferson was a great man," he told host Steve Doocy.  "He wrote the Declaration of Independence, he instilled many of the ideals of freedom and equality that we use in our society today. We also have to acknowledge that he had the past history of slavery, which we look back and say it was horrible today, but was normal at the time."
