Cornish adrenaline junky Tom Butler came across the mammoth wave – estimated to be 100ft tall – at The Nazaré, Portugal last Friday (December 13).

In the incredible footage, Tom can be seen cruising down the giant wave in the freezing cold Atlantic Ocean.

The professional surfer zooms forward as an avalanche of water begins to plummet above him.

"It's like running from a raging bull, you don't stop to think about how much it weighs – if you get eye contact then you've already failed."

Many photo journalists who witnessed the giant wave reckon it's a record breaker, spurring Tom to submit evidence to the World Surf League ahead of the Big Wave Awards in April.

Tom has had his share of low points while surfing at The Nazaré.

Back in 2016, the surfer suffered a split ear, bruised ribs and a leg injury after falling off a 30ft wave at the popular surfing spot.
