THESE stunning skyscraper designs offer a shimmering glimpse of what our skylines could look like in the future.

Submitted to a prestigious architecture contest, they include a foldable building for disaster zones, a post-apocalyptic haven and a vertical city over a volcano.

They want projects that "challenge the way we understand vertical architecture and its relationship with the natural and built environments".

First place was awarded to Skyshelter.zip, designed by Damian Granosik, Jakub Kulisa, and Piotr PaAczyk from Poland.

Inspired by origami, it is a foldable skyscraper, which can be easily transported and deployed in disaster zones.

Tony Leung from Hong Kong was second with his Japanese Shinto Shrine, an urban farming skyscraper.

With rice paddies for roofs, his ambitious design seeks to combine modern living with more traditional Japanese pursuits.

In third was Claudio Araya Arias, from Chile, for his Waria Lemuy fire prevention skyscraper.

His proposal envisioned a new prototype for vertical housing in areas damaged by wild fires in Chile.
