RAF fighter jets have been deployed to head off two Russian planes believed to be supersonic heavy bombers heading for British airspace.

Two Typhoon fighter jets have been sent to escort the Russian planes that were flying towards the northern tip of Scotland.

The Typhoons were dispatched from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray at around 9:30am to deal with the incursion.

A Voyager refuelling craft was sent to support the two jets, but the RAF is yet to confirm the type of Russian planes.

A spokesperson for the RAF said: "We can confirm that quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth scrambled this morning, this is a live operation and therefore we will not be providing any additional information until the mission is complete."

The Belgian Air Force also scrambled fighter jets to check the planes, believed to be Tupolev Tu-160s – newly built long-range strategic bombers codenamed "Blackjack", according to air traffic monitors.
