Betsy DeVos and school choice: Column

• usatoday.com by Laurence Reisman

What can we make of Donald Trump's choice of Betsy DeVos to lead the nation's Department of Education?

It's going to depend on your views of how students should be educated and what the federal government's role should be.

One thing's certain: If confirmed by the Senate, DeVos will be unlike any education secretary this nation has ever seen.

DeVos, who has owned property in Indian River County Florida's beachside Windsor community since 1997 (paying about $56,000 in taxes this year), would be the first philanthropist in the 37 years the position has existed. We've had lawyers, professors, political operatives, educators and politicians hold the job, many of whom had outstanding post-graduate credentials.
