Desert Gardener: Yuma couple uses aquaponics to grow variety of plants

• http://www.yumasun.com, By Karen Bowen

"I watched a YouTube video my son recommended about an Australian gardener and his aquaponics garden," Gerry explained. "The climate in Queensland is very similar to Yuma's, and I was really taken by the large amount of vegetables he could grow in a small space."

"After I saw the YouTube video, I agreed that it was something we could do," her husband, Ed, added. "I was raised on a farm and can pretty much build anything I need to. We emailed this fellow for advice, and I got busy building."

The couple settled on an IBC agriculture container, 4x4 feet, for their first aquaponics garden. These can usually be purchased from a farm and home supply store. Ed cut the container in half to create a tank for fish and a bed for vegetables.
