Safe pot? Tell that to the 62 kids who died

• Arizona Republic

My Turn: More youth deaths are linked to marijuana than alcohol or methamphetamine.

Marijuana is an addictive and hazardous drug. But lately, some have taken to proclaiming that "marijuana is safer than alcohol," a message that is not only wrong but dangerous....

The author of this article goes from "child deaths resulted from substance use" in paragraph 2 to "use was associated with the tragic and needless deaths of 62 children". Equivocating 'resulted from' to 'associated with' is the basis of the LIE that is trying to be run with here. Another weak attempt at GUILT BY ASSOCIATION. Shame on her, and the RAG that printed this tripe. Thanks for bringing this up, Powell. I hope you are doing well with your new-found extra time.

1. Lying County Attorney in that alcohol was number one not marijuana. Also she cannot count as it was 121 LINKED to substance abuse NOT 128. I am surprised she wasn't smart enough to use the much bigger prior year's result.

2. Lying County Attorney in that the drug use mostly involved NOT the children BUT their caretaker(s) [parent] and if one of the caretakers admitted using these substances EVER.

3. Lying County Attorney...keep that in mind the next time you are on a jury in a criminal trial.

".... There were 121 deaths associated with substance use in 2012, a decrease from the 215 deaths associated with substance use in 2011. A child’s death would be considered “associated with substance use” if the child or the child’s parent or caretaker, or the person responsible for the incident leading to the death, abused substances. Deaths associated with substances included illegal drugs, prescription drugs and/or alcohol. Alcohol is the most commonly used substance associated with a child's death in Arizona, followed by marijuana use and methamphetamine use. Substance abuse was associated with deaths of children due to accidents, homicide, suicide, and maltreatment...." [p. 7, see also Table 11]

addendum: She gets to reprieved a little on both numbers and alcohol versus marijuana. She was discussing a newer report. She is still deliberately misleading to get her way and since she ostensibly is supposed ot be carrying out public will not her will....

".... There were 128 deaths associated with substance use in 2013. Substance use is considered associated with a child’s death if the child, the child’s parent, caretaker and/or the person responsible, and anyone directly involved in the circumstances surrounding the time of the incident leading to the death, used or abused substances, including illegal drugs, prescription drugs and/or alcohol. In 2013, substance use was associated with 16 percent of all child fatalities with accidents accounting for 51 percent of substance use related deaths. In 2013, marijuana was the most commonly used substance associated with a child's death in Arizona, followed closely by alcohol and then methamphetamines. Substance use or abuse was linked to the deaths of children in almost every listed cause of death. The top five causes of death were motor vehicle crashes, firearms, suffocation, poisonings and medically related fatalities...." [p. 11-12]

".... Of the drugs and/or alcohol or prescription drugs associated with death, marijuana was associated with 62 deaths (eight percent), alcohol with 46 deaths (six percent), opiates with 22 deaths (three percent) and methamphetamines with 20 deaths (three percent) (Table 12). Although there was a rise in associated marijuana use over alcohol in 2013, this may not be indicative of a new trend as the reported percentages of these two substances fluctuate from year to year (Table 12). It was also usually a combination of some of these substances and not just one, which played a part in the fatality incident...." [lead for Table 12]
