As Israel Tensions Rise, Administration to Send Rice, Power to AIPAC

• http://news.antiwar.com, Jason Ditz

With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visiting next week, US-Israeli relations are at what many are warning is a long-time low. Bar-Ilan University expert in US-Israeli relations Eytan Gilboa warned that the untouchable, bipartisan nature of the alliance "has now been badly broken."

The Obama Administration is open with its criticism of Netanyahu, but will not be boycotting the AIPAC conference as previously speculated. Rather, they're sending National Security Adviser Susan Rice and UN Ambassador Samantha Power.

The choice of speakers suggests they're going to keep the tensions rising, with Rice openly condemning Netanyahu this week for being "destructive" to US relations by making ties into a partisan issue.

Republican Congressional leaders orchestrated Netanyahu's visit, over objections from the White House, and Netanyahu has been clear about his intentions to use the visit to lobby against diplomacy with Iran, saying he will "do anything" to kill the diplomatic process.
