At least 6,106 Killed in Iraq during January

• http://original.antiwar.com, by Margaret Griffis

Antiwar.com found 1,587 deaths reported among civilians and security members. Another 4,519 dead were reported among Islamic State militants. The number of wounded was 1,953, including 431 injured militants.

According to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, 1,375 people were killed during January, including 790 civilians. Another 2,240 people were wounded, both civilians and security members. However, the U.N. does not count militant casualties. They also do not count civilian or military casualties in militant territory such as Anbar province.

Combining the higher wounded number reported by U.N. representatives in Iraq and those discovered by Antiwar.com, the January casualty figures are 6,106 and 2,240. These figures are not independently confirmable and should be considered only estimates. The U.N figures are the absolute minimum. The casualties figures among the Islamic State militants are unknown and mostly provided by the Iraq government. Certainly, the militants have suffered a considerably higher number of wounded.
