Britain’s ruling Conservative and Liberal Democrats were braced for a difficult Sunday night,..

Several Liberal Democrat MPs on Sunday backed a grassroots rebellion by activists against leader Nick Clegg, as pollsters predicted the loss of most of the party’s 12 seats in Brussels.

Mr Clegg had led an outspoken pro-EU campaign, only to find the party lagging behind the Greens in fifth place in some opinion polls.

As more than 200 activists called for the deputy prime minister’s departure, Tim Farron, the left-leaning party president, appealed for unity.

The Conservatives will also feel the heat if they receive a lower share of the vote than Ukip when the European election results come in late on Sunday night.
