Residents Call for Police Chief's Resignation

• Next News Network

Robert Copeland, the police chief in the town of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, used the N-word when describing President Obama. Residents in the village of 6,000 people and beyond immediately started calling for his resignation. Copeland has refused to apologize for his remark. Jane O'Toole, a resident of the town, overheard the 82-year-old make the comment in a restaurant in March. In an email to other police, the elected official said, "I believe I did use the 'N' word in reference to the current occupant of the White House. For this, I do not apologize -- he meets and exceeds my criteria for such." There are approximately 20 African-Americans in Wolfeboro, and no minorities among the twelve full-time officers who make up the police force there. At a recent meeting of the Police Commission, around 20 people called for his resignation, and two spoke in defense of the Copeland.
