Portman's shift has delighted pro-gay marriage groups on the right and the left, but some have argued that his deeply personal reflections on the issue did not go far enough in making the conservative argument for marriage equality.

That begs the question — what is the conservative case for gay marriage?

The most common argument is that marriage is generally a good thing for everybody. Like social conservatives, pro-gay Republicans argue that the institution of marriage strengthens families and communities and decreases the likelihood that an individual will turn to the government for assistance.

Here's the argument for gay and straight marriage. (My opinion, it's none of the state's business) If more people adopted this view all the conflict over gay marriage would disappear:

Please, please Mr. Government recognize my marriage. I need it recognized so that my marriage is official and held together (or not) at the point of a gun. I need to enter into a three party contract that give you the tools needed to allocate property and children, just in case it doesn't work out, dontchaknow. While I am mature enough to get married, I just can't see being able to handle these issues on my own by writing my own marriage vows/agreement/contract. You wise men in the GUNverment know far better than I (and my spouse) how to solve these conflicts.....EVEN THOUGH YOU DON'T KNOW WHO I AM!!!!!
