America's Most Notorious Sheriff Is Behind One Of The Biggest Issues In Today's Election

• http://www.businessinsider.com, Abby Rogers
Not only is Arizona's Sheriff Joe Arpaio up for reelection himself, but the issues he represents hold a major stake in today's presidential election.

Arpaio has long campaigned for the right to detain suspects based only on his belief they are in America illegally — a practice the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals slapped down in September.

But how do his views play out on the national scene?

USA Today estimates nearly 11 million people are in this country illegally — a drastic jump from the 1.9 million illegal immigrants recorded in 1988 — effectively guaranteeing illegal immigration will remain a hot-button issue during the next presidential term.

Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has attacked lax immigration policies during the Republican primaries, railing against Texas Gov. Rick Perry for a state law allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition in Texas, The Washington Post reported last month.
