Iran Attempts To Crowdsource Intelligence Gathering With A New Website

• http://www.businessinsider.com, Geoffrey Ingersoll
So the media went crazy today as the story about Iran's "Secret Service" opening up a website spread across the web like the flu.

But it seems like they're all missing the point.

Here are some headlines:

"Iran’s secret service launches website in bid to soften its image, connect with Iranian people" — Washington Post

"Iran's Secret Service Launches Website" — ABC

And then the uber-hyperbolic, point-missing header from The Times of Israel declares, "In an unprecedented move, Iran's secret service launches a website"

Since when is launching websites unprecedented? It's 2012, not 1985.

Most of the stories then mention that the new website "trumpets" Iran's intelligence successes against the West, that it's an effort to "soften" the intelligence service's image, and that notifying citizens of the locations of satellite secret service departments is considered "outreach."
