Deadly air

Every year Mexico, whose capital is one of the world’s largest and most contaminated cities, registers 14,374 premature deaths tied to air pollution, according to the World Health Organization.

Air pollution costs are equal to 4.4 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, added the National Statistics and Geography Institute on the panel “Health at Risk: Air Contamination and Mexican Cities,” held on May 16.

“We urgently have to update the air quality norms in terms of health,” said Víctor Hugo Borja-Arbuto, who heads an epidemiology unit in Mexico’s Social Welfare Institute.
