High-Speed Chase Ends in Officer-Involved Shooting Man killed after confusing series of crimes Updated: Saturday, 20 Aug 2011, 6:41 PM MST Published : Saturday, 20 Aug 2011, 4:49 PM MST PHOENIX - A carjacking has led to a high-speed chase that ended with an officer-involved shooting and the death of a suspect in Phoenix on Saturday afternoon. Phoenix police began chasing a suspect who allegedly carjacked a woman. The woman called police and said that she had been carjacked earlier in the week at the Mills Avenue Mall in Tempe. The woman said she saw the male suspect behind the wheel of her stolen car at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday in the area of 67th Avenue and Maryland. Police looked for the silver Lincoln by air and found it in the area of 51st Avenue and Glendale, where the suspect hit multiple police cars, other vehicles and curbs before the stolen car the suspect was driving stalled out from the collisions. The suspect then allegedly tried to carjack three different vehicles before forcing a woman in a white jeep out of her vehicle. People told Fox 10 that's when they heard shots fired. They were not surprised and said that the area was known for gang-related activities such as carjackings and robberies. In the meantime, a police officer responding to the crash and carjackings crashed in the area of 51st Avenue and Peoria. No details have been released about that crash. Police then chased the suspect in the jeep. They said he was shot to death by officers in the area of Interstate 17 and Cactus, at the southbound entrance ramp, after they said he tried to ram the stolen jeep into their vehicles. They said they yelled commands for him to stop, but he did not. He was killed at the scene. Various law enforcement agencies, including the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Phoenix and Glendale police, Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies and Phoenix Fire crews are at the scene near I-17 and Cactus, and drivers are advised to avoid the area. About 50 law enforcement vehicles, including two large crime scene trailers, are in that area, and the investigation is expected to take several hours. No names have been released.
