How an Electric Motorcycle Made Record Time

• WIRED.com

San Francisco startup Mission Motors made a little history when factory rider Steve Rapp lapped Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 1 minute, 31.3 seconds. That number is amazing for several reasons.

First, it’s a track record for an electric vehicle of any kind. Second, the run during qualifying for the TTXGP on July 23 would have put Rapp fifth on the grid for that weekend’s AMA Supersport race — and just 10 seconds behind the Moto GP pack. Third, and perhaps most impressive, it was 12.3 seconds faster than the record-setting lap Rapp made during the Refuel race at Laguna Seca on June 26.

That’s right. Rapp and the guys at Mission Motors shaved 12 seconds from their time in the space of a month.

Rapp went on to win the TTXGP electric motorcycle grand prix that weekend, posting lap times of 1:33 or so and blowing away his rivals at MotoCzysz, Lightning and Brammo. We caught up with Rap and Mission Motors marketing guru David Salguero to ask about this impressive achievement.
