The U.S. Federal Election Commission approved 5-1 Stephen Colbert’s political action committee or PAC, which will allow him to raise money from donors in advance of the 2012 presidential elections. Colbert was granted a media exemption which grants him the right to use resources like staff and air-time from his show, “The Colbert Report,” without it being identified as an in-kind contribution from Viacom Inc., Comedy Central’s parent company. This exemption to campaign finance rules does not give Colbert license to run its ads on networks other than Comedy Central. If he chooses to do so, the Colbert Super PAC will have to disclose those finance details.
