The Senate will take up debate of START on Thursday morning, after eight
Republicans crossed the aisle in an initial vote Wednesday. Ultimately
the count was 66-32 vote in favor of proceeding with the legislation.
The Washington Post called it an "auspicious first step for the
U.S.-Russia nuclear treaty." Ratification of the treaty will require 67
votes. At least one Democratic senator who was not present for
Wednesday's vote said he will vote for the treaty when it comes up for
final passage. Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican from South Carolina, had
threatened to force the entire treaty to be read aloud, but he relented
Wednesday under criticism from the White House, Majority Leader Harry
Reid, and his own minority leader. The treaty is a top priority for the
White House and Reid as the Senate attempts to wrap up its business
before the end of the year.
