Phoenix police are investigating allegations of embezzlement tied to a campaign account of former City Councilman Greg Stanton. Stanton, now deputy state attorney general, said he reported more than $75,000 missing from the account to police in early October after a check bounced from the fund. He had attempted to donate $500 from the campaign fund to Aguila Youth Leadership Institute, a non-profit that helps train Hispanic students become college bound.

Someone from the organization alerted him that there were insufficient funds in the account on Oct. 12.

Stanton said he didn't realize the money was drained from the bank account because he relied on campaign-finance reports his treasurer filed with the Phoenix City Clerk Department to track the funds.

The family of Stanton's campaign treasurer, Mindy Shields, issued a statement saying the family is trying to deal with the investigation with "love and understanding" and that they "respect the job the authorities have to do."

(From Phoenix New Times article - Shields, a well-known lobbyist and influential figure in Valley politics, tells New Times:
"I love my daughter with all my heart, and Greg is a good friend. While stunned and saddened, our family is trying to deal with this with love and understanding. While we can be helpful to her financially and emotionally, this is something my daughter will have to work through." - Note: Billy Shields was the Treasurer for the Phoenix Firefighter's Union years ago)
