Maricopa County Master Gardeners Fall Plant Sale!

• e-mail from Easton Kelsey (THANKS!)
Fall Plant Sale Take Advantage of the Cooler Weather to Learn How to Plant and Choose What to Plant in One Location

The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Maricopa County Master Gardeners are pleased to announce their Fall Plant Sale on Saturday, October 30, 2010, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Office located at 4341 E. Broadway Road in Phoenix. Click to map it!

This is a joint plant sale, in conjunction with the Arizona Cultivar of the California Rare Fruit Growers (AZCRFG), as well as the Arizona Herb Association (AHA). Booths will also be set up by the Valley of the Sun Garden Club, OutGardening and Australian Outback Plants.

Admission is free and presentations by Master Gardeners will provide valuable guidance for getting your garden back in shape after our scorching summer heat and the wet and windy monsoons. Fall is an excellent time for planting and the plants for sale have been grown right here in the Valley by the Master Gardeners and local nurseries. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase.

During the sale, speakers will be presenting the following topics:

8:00 a.m. Fall Herb Gardening

9:00 a.m. Rose Planting and Care

10:00 a.m. Square Foot Gardening

11:00 a.m. Australian Plants for the Landscape

12:00 p.m. Desert Gardening 101

1:00 p.m. Growing Tropical Guavas

Come meet your local Master Gardeners and learn how to select, place and care for plants in the low desert.

The Mission of the Maricopa County Master Gardener Program is to teach people to select, place and care for plants in an environmentally responsible manner based on research specific to the low desert.

The wife and I just got back from this event.  IT WAS GREAT!  There were lots of inexpensive (as little as 50 cents!) exotic plants and cacti and this and that and and and...

If you are into gardening at all, this is not to be missed!  We made the mistake of going at 9:00 a.m. - an hour after they were open - and the selection was still good, but we heard that the 'early birds' had gotten the good worms.  Next year we are going to be waiting in line for it to open.

We ended up getting a fig plant for $8 and a Mona Lisa banana tree for $10.  Excellent.

Thanks Ed.  These events are ongoing throughout the nation and everyone gardening should Google 'master gardener' or 'Cooperative Extension' plus their area for their local events.   Great buys, great advice, great contacts.
