The 407-acre (165-hectare) wooded site has a fortified stone house with 18-inch (46-centimeter)-thick walls and guard towers. It will soon be auctioned, opening at $2.6 million,( £1.5 million).

Capone — nicknamed “Scarface” — ran a major smuggling, gambling and prostitution syndicate in the late 1920s and early 1930s, during Prohibition, when alcohol was banned.

He was the mastermind of the the St Valentine’s Day Massacre, the gangland killing on Chicago’s North Side in 1929. Seven of his rivals were gunned down in a garage, but police never managed to connect him to the crime.
