Freedom Activism 101

The following aphorisms are the work of libertarian novelist L. Neil Smith. They have been the bedrock for libertarian activism in Arizona for the last 20 years (since 1994 - now going on 21 years, this was written a while ago) and are the best explanation I can provide for the tactics of our past/future. Enjoy.

*Never soft-peddle the truth. It's seldom self-evident and almost never sells itself, because there's less sales resistance to a glib and comforting lie.

*Understand from the minute the fight begins that you're going to take damage. Accept it. (You'll always suffer more from the idiots and cowards on your own side than from any enemy.) Keep your overall goal in mind above all. Those who swerve to avoid a few cuts and bruises defeat themselves.

*If you're not a little bit uncomfortable with your position, it isn't radical enough. How can you be too principled? Take the most extreme position you can. You're claiming territory you won't have to fight for later, mostly against your "allies."

*Go straight to the heart of the enemy's greatest strength. Break that and you break him. You can always mop up the flanks and stragglers later, and they may even surrender, saving you a lot of effort.

*Know, down to the last cell in your body, that the other guy started it. He's the one who put things in an ethical context where considerations like decency and mercy have no referent. The less pity moves you now, the sooner you can go back to being a nice guy.

*If you lose, go down fighting. It costs nothing extra, and now and again ...

*Remain the judge of your own actions. Never surrender that position by default. When the enemy screams "Foul!" the loudest, you know you're doing him the most damage. Those who help him scream are also the enemy.

*Second thoughts, failures of confidence, nervous last-minute course-changes are all detours and recipes for defeat. The time to think is before the battle - if possible, before the war - not in the heat of it.

*It is moral weakness, rather than villainy, that accounts for most of the evil in the universe" and feeble-hearted allies, far rather than your most powerful enemies, who are likeliest to do you an injury you cannot recover from.

*Know, otherhandwise, that the easiest, most humiliating path to defeat is thinking that to beat the enemy you must be like him. Avoid the temptation to set your values aside "for the duration." What's the point of fighting if you give up what you're fighting for? If remaining consistent with your values leads to defeat, you chose the wrong values to begin with.

*Never aim at anything but total achievement of your goal: the utter capitulation of the enemy. Every effort involves inertia and mechanical losses, so adopting any lesser objective means partial defeat. Total victory means you don't have to fight the same fight again tomorrow.

*The most dangerous and successful conspiracies take place in public, in plain sight, under the clear, bright light of day" usually with TV cameras focused on them.

*Ever notice how those who believe in animal rights generally don't believe in human rights?

*The function of government is to provide you with service; the function of the media is to supply the Vaseline.

*"Wake up America," you demand? America doesn't need to "wake up" " by which of course, you mean pay attention to whatever you think is important. If America weren't already awake, paying attention to what each individual thinks is important, your milk wouldn't have gotten delivered this morning, and you wouldn't have any electricity this afternoon.

*You cannot force me to agree with you. You can force me to act as though I agree with you" but then you'll have to watch your back. All the time.

*You may never convince the other guy, but it's often worthwhile to keep arguing for the effect it has on bystanders, especially his allies.

Yeah, sometimes you need to v*te

10-25-2018 •, by Claire

Of course I know all the principled and practical arguments against v*ting. I've made many of those arguments myself. I admire Wendy McElroy, who famously wrote that she would not even have v*ted against Hitler.

I don't knock anybody who chooses to v*te — or who chooses not to. I've been on both sides and see both points of view.

I was born to a v*te-worshipping mother, raised to politics, and gave it all up mostly out of futility after the one "victory" I took part in turned out to be the worst sort of failure, a total betrayal.

But in the last couple of years, I admit I've once again resorted to v*ting — this time solely as a self-defense measure.

I never v*te for anything; it's as much an exercise in futility as I learned after the Great Betrayal of 1994. Freedom never comes from supporting government and governors. Governing systems are inherently tyrannical and are designed to get bigger and nastier over time. Putting energy into them is diverting energy from real freedom efforts.

But damn, sometimes …

I-1639: Major Anti-Gun Horror.

This year, in Washington state, there's an initiative on the ballot that's the very devil itself. I-1639 is such a lie, such a horror for gun rights, safety, and liberty in general that it's hard to describe its badness accurately.

This is an initiative, almost entirely funded by billionaires, that would, among many other Very Bad Things:

Criminalize defense of home and family by forcing all firearms to be locked away, unavailable for rapid use;

Deny people between 18 and 21 all gun rights;

Insanely, absurdly reclassify even such classic firearms as the Ruger 10/22 — often a child's first firearm — as "assault rifles."

… and about a dozen other outrages. Even the way this mess got on the ballot was crazy and corrupt. Its billionaire backers could pay hugely for signatures ($5-$9 apiece). But they couldn't pay for competence. The initiative was printed on the petitions in ways that violated state law (print too small to read; no use of strikeouts and underlines to indicate changes to existing law). In the end, only a biased, excuse-making state supreme court allowed this total botch to go to a v*te.

If Seattle rules — as it so often does — Washington will have probably the worst gun law in the country. And this in a state that until a few years ago managed to balance blue with gun-friendliness.

If you want to see all the memes on this, Joe Huffman has been posting one nearly every day. Here's the latest and another. He's got a lot. Just go to his blog and scroll.

Carbon Emissions? Ha! Just Another Environmental Scam.

Also on the ballot is a lesser horror called I-1631. This is Washington's second attempt to impose a state level carbon tax.

It's got an odd backstory. Not long ago, there was a "good" carbon tax initiative, I-732, on the ballot. No, you and I wouldn't think it was good. But it was revenue neutral and actually dealt with the question of pollutants. Surprisingly, it was defeated by the very people you'd think would support such a thing — The Nature Conservancy, The Sierra Club, and the other usual environmental suspects.

Now, with I-1631, those same groups have come back with an initiative of their own. It has no plan at all to deal with carbon emissions. Any "plan" would be decided by an unelected board. But while raising the cost of living by $440 in its first year (with no limit in the long run) it would funnel a great deal of money into the pockets of its sponsors and supporters.

So naturally, they're claiming it's vital for ending pollution and only Big Oil opposes it. (Big Oil, they say, would cover all the cost; they seem unacquainted with the concept of corporations invariably passing costs on to customers — in this case clobbering low-income people where it hurts most, in fuel costs and all the daily necessities like food that are affected by fuel costs.)

You can read about it here from Cliff Mass, the area's most respected meteorologist (and no biased right-winger).

If you're a registered voter in Washington state, you already have your ballot by now. I hold my nose and hold my breath and say: "Use it." Although online registration is closed, you can still register in person until Monday, October 29.

I also thank our own faithful Commentariat member Comrade X, who has been one of the main public voices against the victim-disarming horror of I-1639. Today he'll be debating the chief spokesthing of the gun banners.

There's hope that both initiatives will fail. Comrade X reports that the yes on I-1639 crowd often doesn't even send a representative to speak for it in debates, and that he's seeing anti-I-1639 lawn signs at the homes of people who have no other political signs — indicating apolitical gun owners rising to the occasion. The pro-disarmament campaign is so badly managed that they even lost control of what should have been their own natural domain names — which as you see from the above links belong to the pro-freedom side.

It's all about whether Seattle turns out more v*ters than the Washington hinterlands.

OTOH, even some liberals are waking up to the fact that the I-1631 carbon tax initiative is basically a money-making scam being pulled in the name of protecting the environment.

So we shall see.

But yeah … I'm sorry Wendy. I agree with you in theory. And I know it's a delusion to imagine we can v*te our way to freedom.

But sometimes a v*te is as necessary as any other self-defense weapon.

Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai

Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai, the inventor of email and polymath, holds four degrees from MIT and is a world-renowned systems scientist. He is a Fulbright Scholar, Lemelson-MIT Awards Finalist, First Outstanding Scientist and Technologist of Indian Origin (STIO), Westinghouse Science Talent Honors Award recipient, and was nominated for the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation. In 1982, the US government recognized Ayyadurai as the inventor of email by awarding him the first Copyright for "Email" at a time when Copyright was the only way to protect software inventions. His interest in human health also began early, when as a child, he observed his grandmother, a village farmer and healer, practice Siddha, India's oldest system of traditional medicine.  This motivated his future study and research in systems biology at MIT, leading to his discovery of Systems Health®, a major breakthrough that provides an integrative framework linking eastern and western medicine. His latest invention CytoSolve®, emerging from his doctoral research at MIT, provides a revolutionary platform for modeling complex biological phenomena, to support the development multi-combination medicines without animal testing.

Dr. Shiva's previous interviews on the Declare Your Independence with Ernest Hancock Radio Show:

About Shiva and why he is running for U.S. Senate (Independent)

I am running for United States Senate from Massachusetts to be a 21st century Senator. We stand at the crossroads where we can either head into a Golden Age or into the Darkness. Incredible innovation and solutions, which have been created by everyday Americans, already exist for energy, education, health, affordable housing and much more. What stands in the way are the old guard of career politicians, political hacks, lawyer-lobbyists and academics who pervade Washington and local government with corruption and crony capitalism that chokes and suffocates these innovations and solutions from reaching us. America becomes great when innovators, entrepreneurs, working people with skills and those committed to using common sense and reason run this country. The Founders of America were blacksmiths, engineers, soldiers, architects, entrepreneurs, scientists — they actually worked for a living and produced through their labor, products and services to help other citizens.

I stand before you as someone who is a personification of the American Dream. My parents and I left the caste system of India in 1970 where we were considered low caste "Untouchables" and "Deplorables". We first settled in Paterson, NJ and I went through the public school system where I was fortunate to have come across incredibly dedicated teachers, coaches and mentors.

The Real Fighter

On my 7th birthday, in 1970, I left India and came to America: to this land of incredible opportunity. As a kid, I learned from my parents, teachers, coaches, and friends that what mattered most was Truth — to uncover it, share it and fight for it. That core value is THE foundation of the America Dream. And my life has been about fighting for Truth, at every step.

Climate Change. Clean Air, Water and Land

Clean air, clean water and clean land is the foundation of life. Our air is polluted. COPD/lung diseases are the most prevalent disorders globally. The amount of plastic waste in the ocean is now being referred to as "plastic islands." Our landfills are overflowing with municipal waste, rubber, metals, etc. These are undeniable facts. We need to move beyond the …

Be The Light! Innovation Is The Way.

As a scientist and engineer, I know that Nature is the ultimate designer and the supreme engineer. The laws of Nature reveal that intelligence and innovation exists everywhere and is not centralized. But there are those like Elizabeth Warren who think they are God and all-knowing. She is quite certain that SHE KNOWS BETTER. The truth is: YOU KNOW BETTER. …

Real Jobs. Good Wages.

Beyond just Silicon Valley or Kendall Square, let's create 21st century jobs that take advantage of the incredible advances in science, engineering, medicine, and the long-awaited return of manufacturing and fair trade practices. (Elizabeth Warren was paid $300,000+ for teaching just ONE class at Harvard.)

Low Taxes. Fair Taxes.

Money goes where there's a stable economy, low inflation and low taxes. Increasing taxes on those who innovate and take risks to deliver jobs will destroy our system. (According to, Elizabeth Warren wants a corporate income tax rate of 105%. Our current 35% corporate tax is the highest in the industrialized world.)

Care And Health In "Healthcare"

Neither Obamacare nor RyanCare address REAL "care" or "health." We need CARE that provides choice, accountability and affordability. We need HEALTH that integrates state of the art innovations and discoveries from East & West, Ancient & Modern, Science & Tradition for everyone. (Elizabeth Warren receives government health care as a senator.)
