Vin Suprynowicz was for 20 years an editorial writer and (assistant) Editorial Page Editor at the daily Las Vegas Review-Journal, one of America's few libertarian -- small "L" libertarian -- daily newspapers.
Before that, back in the '80s, Vin was Editor of the weekly West Valley View, in Avondale, Arizona. In that capacity he met and interviewed John McCain, when John McCain was first running for the U.S. Senate. At the end of that interview, John McCain pointed at Vin and said, "There's a man I haven't convinced." He was right. That year, the View endorsed McCain's Libertarian opponent, Rick Tompkins.
A few years after that, protesting the national Libertarian Party's attempt to lay hands on tax dollars to help run their presidential campaign, Libertarians here in the Grand Canyon State placed L. Neil Smith and Vin Suprynowicz on their presidential ticket. Fortunately, they did not win.
Vin, who disagrees with many Libertarians on the topic of Open Borders, now lives in the high Nevada desert, where he was for a time a close neighbor of late-night radio guy Art Bell. He and The Brunette raise cats and quail, and are guarded by a family of Attack Roadrunners.
Vin also writes a monthly column for "Firearms News," which used to be called "Shotgun News." He sells vintage books Online, and he's published five or six books, including "Send in the Waco Killers," "The Ballad of Carl Drega," L. Neil Smith's "Lever Action," and a couple of novels involving a rare-book dealer and the War on Drugs -- "The Testament of James" and "The Miskatonic Manuscript."

Of course, no one's saying Republicans — even insurgent Trump Republicans — didn't have troubles in the mid-America primaries and the Ohio special congressional election of Aug. 7. While Trump-endorsed Republicans went 5-0, and the three far-left Democrats who had been endorsed and garnered personal appearances by Socialists Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez all lost, the margins were tighter than they otherwise might have been — should have been — simply because Republicans managed lower primary voter turnout percentages than Democrats in Ohio, Kansas, and elsewhere.

I see where an unidentified white male — possibly a disgruntled reader — wielding a shotgun, killed five and "gravely wounded" seven today at the offices of the Annapolis Capital Times, a daily newspaper increasingly shifting to "digital platforms," a subsidiary of the Baltimore Sun and thus, eventually, of the Chicago Tribune and the Big Media Conglomerate known as "Tronc."

I went out to a bar the other night to listen to karaoke. Yeah, I do that. For some perverted reason, a young lady near the entrance demanded that I produce identification. Since I am plainly a 72-year-old man in a wheelchair, I felt that this was peculiar and uncalled-for—especially since no other place I go like this makes a similar demand—and if they couldn't tell that I was over 21, they didn't really deserve my custom. The people with me were upset—that I was upset—not that we were all being treated unreasonably.

Ordinarily I wouldn't have been interested in a woman famous mostly for her bra size (well, almost wouldn't), but she is a close personal friend to Julian Assange, who is a big hero to me and my family. We believe Donald Trump would not be President today, without the whistle-blowing revolution Assange started. Given what happened to him afterward—six years of exile and near solitary confinement in the Ecuadorian embassy in London—he is also a persecuted martyr to the cause of liberty.

Or your grandchildren? Do you lament the lack of good stories and adventures like they had when you were a kid? There's a reason for that: modern, stupid, politically correct theories among publishers and "educators".
Or maybe the kids don't read at all. In the words of Ghostbusters' Egon Spengler, "Print is dead." I hope that's not true, because if it is, that means I'm out of business and our civilization is next.
When I was very young, no more than five or six years old, my mother read Daniel Dafoe's Robinson Crusoe to me, and _Gulliver's Travels_, going slow and explaining the hard parts and archaic language as we went along. Her mother had been a one-room country school-teacher, and I guess Mom had picked up the habits. Hearing those books probably set me on the path I've followed ever since. She read others to me, but those are the ones I remember best.
I guess this is really kind of a commercial—or shameless self-promotion. I'm writing it to suggest that you buy my books for your kids—or grand-kids—to read (it's cheaper than most ovies nowadays), or that you read to them, yourself. There are more than thirty of them at this point. This link http://www.ncc-1776.org/books-so-far.html will take you to a list of them, with brief descriptions and tell you where to find them. My books are bright, positive, full of ideas and interesting characters. They have definite good-guys, unmistakable bad-guys, and they're always about individual liberty and courage, one way or another.
Occasionally I brush across grown-up topics, but in a way kids can appreciate and absorb. They have to learn sometime, and I am the gentlest of teachers. I don't impose the trendy crap on them that public schools do. For example, my first book, _The Probability Broach_, is unquestionably science fiction, but it's about George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Albert Gallatin, and the Whiskey Rebellion.

It's entirely possible that I explain myself too much at times; it annoys me when I have to do it. It means I didn't do my job right (mostly I have always thought of myself as a teacher who had to construct his own classroom) in the first place. Unlike a public school teacher, no one is obliged to attend my classes or listen to what I say. That just makes it more challenging.
The other day, I was perusing the Internet, as one does, when I saw a message from a longtime friend of mine telling some third party that he thought I might have made a mistake, voting for Donald Trump. Two responses came immediately to mind: first, that I have been engaged in politics since 1962 and I don't make mistakes like that; second, that I thought I had made my reasons for voting that way "perfectly clear".
Apparently I had not, so I'll take one more shot at it now and then forget it. If I can't teach this lesson, then nobody can, and given that most people's reaction to Trump is more visceral than cerebral, it probably can't be taught. I don't vote with my gut, or by the seat of my pants, I vote with my brain.
Aside from Trump, there were five other political alternatives to choose among in 2017. Here is the way the situation looked to me:
First and foremost, there wasn't any way I was going to vote for Hillary Clinton. Her overt policies would have been the same disastrous left-wing garbage as Obama's, possibly worse, and her covert policies are flatly criminal and murderous. She has illegitimately accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars, fostered the deaths of at least dozens, and treated the hungry children of devastated Haiti (just to name an example) like used dirt. She is, as the poetic James Woods has put it, "a drunken hag" who left good men to die unspeakably on the Benghazi sands, when she might have saved them with a single phone call. Instead of acting like a betrayed wife, she attempted to destroy the lives of the women her husband preyed on.
Besides, with the single exception of Senator Eugene McCarthy in 1968, I have never supported a Democrat Presidential candidate and likely never will.
In a recent _L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise_ article concerning Democratic Socialist House candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, I fairly thoroughly spelled out what's wrong with her (she's a perfect air-head, unfortunately) and with socialism, democratic or otherwise, in general. When you boil it down, it's a socio-economic "theory" based on theft, an attempt to make stealing from other people sound respectable. That's all Bernie Sanders meant to me at the beginning of the 2017 campaign, and when all was said and done, he sold out to Hillary Clinton. At that, I guess it's better than being axe-murdered (we call it Arkancide) like Leon Trotsky.
I didn't really know much about the Green Party's Jill Stein (I still don't), but I have been fighting against green politics all my adult life. I have never believed that the Earth needs saving, but that politicians can utterly ruin uncountable human lives pretending to do it. That's why the villains in most of my Ngu Family Saga novels (you should read them) are from the "Mass Movement", a 22nd century eco-fascist organization trying to stop offworld imports for spurious reasons. A hundred years from now, historians will laugh at those in our century who gave any credence to trendy idiocies like Global Warming. Me, I'd rather be laughed at for something else.
Last, and certainly least, there was Gary Johnson, ex-Governor of the Socialist State of New Mexico, and the nominated candidate of what's left of the Libertarian party. No LP candidate ever knew less about libertarianism. Campaigning, Johnson said one incredibly cretinous thing after another, never mentioning, as far as I know, the Zero Aggression Principle or even the Bill of Rights, and allowing as how some gun laws might be acceptable to him—and by implication, to other libertarians. Nor would he take any offers (they were made) to teach him the rudiments of elementary libertarianism. His stupidity cost the Party all the votes I influence and it cost them my lifelong loyalty and effort. Good job, Gary, you bucket-head.
Now, assuming you're a libertarian and rational (I didn't write this for _The Conservative Enterprise_, after all) who, in the sacred name of John Moses Browning would you have given your vote to? I'm sure there will be plenty panting to rush in and self-righteously proclaim, "You could always not vote!" The trouble is, I did my tour of electoral pacifism, about a decade of it, in the last century. It left me with a very bad taste in my mouth, placing my fate meekly in the hands of unknown others. If I had withheld my vote and Hillary had won, I would feel guilty even if it doesn't make statistical sense. I have also enjoyed rejoining my civilization after fifty-six years of pressing my nose to the glass.
Maybe it's my age.
Donald Trump is neither a Democrat nor a Republican. He is certainly not a Libertarian, nor does he claim to be. For once, that's quite all right. When I need my roof fixed, I don't ask about the roofer's politics, only if he can fix my roof. Trump is an uncategorizable one-off, possibly unique in history. He has traits in common with Theodore Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and even Lyndon Johnson. He built beautiful tall buildings in the business-hostile environments of the world's biggest, most-corrupt cities. He's just the guy to fix the American roof that was shot full of holes by three previous Presidents who happened to be evil morons.

I joined the newly-formed Libertarian Party in Denver, in 1972, the first full year it existed. I got to know its principal founder, David F. Nolan, reasonably well.
I stood out in the driving rain and in boiling heat at public places, collecting ballot-petition signatures. I gave speeches and appeared on radio shows many times. I served on the National Platform Committee twice, the Colorado State Platform Committee on several occasions, and ran for public office as a Libertarian Party candidate twice.
I wrote hundreds, if not thousands of articles, columns, and essays arguing for a free society based on libertarian principles. When my input and advice were not even considered by the national party leadership, I wrote my first political/adventure novel, _The Probability Broach_, which angered some who for some reason thought I should have sought their permission, but became (and still is) the definitive literary statement of the movement. A well-funded foundation that became the LP power elite blocked me from further service on the National Platform Committee.
Soon, cynical creeps calling themselves "pragmatists" began to destroy everything that people like me had built over two decades, including chopping up our carefully-constructed platform and rejecting the "Non-Aggression Principle", which is the very heart and soul of the libertarian philosophy, and disastrously dumbing the party down until it resembled the political party equivalent of USA Today. Those who adhered to principle were mocked as "purists". As people like me began to leave, an eerie political correctness began to sift into the vacuum we left.
It's something of a cliche to say that I didn't leave the LP, the LP left me, but that's exactly what has happened. Today, believing that I'm a better spokesman for libertarianism than what's left of the Libertarian Party, I write a couple of essays a week. I'm finishing up my 35th novel and planning a couple more.
6. Exactly How Stupid Do You Have To Be?

Way down south in Venezuela, they've eaten their cats and dogs—and the animals in the zoo. In North Korea, I've heard they're eating one another. And in Sweden (as in much of Europe) hostile barbarian savages are eating Western Civilization alive.
California is eating itself.
In each case (and many another you and I could both name) it's all because of an obsolete and discredited 19th century idea, an insidious, poisonous, obscene idea first promulgated by hustler and flimflammer Karl Marx in 1875: "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs". It's the same idea that killed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and is presently killing the Kingdom of Great Britain. It has killed perhaps hundreds of millions of individuals in the past century.
The key word, here, of course, is "socialist" which refers to an economic and political buzzing bonnet-bee defined by that quote of Marx's about needs and abilities. Given what we used to call "current world problems", this is hardly the apprpriate historical moment in which to attempt to re-introduce it into the only country on the entire planet that seems to be working right.
Enter, however, an attractive but extremely tone-deaf, short-sighted, and historically ignorant young woman by the name of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In the highly unlikely case you missed it, she recently unseated a ten-term incumbent Democratic candidate for the United States House of Representatives by promising voters to bring Venezuela, North Korea, Sweden, and California here to America where we can truly appreciate them, and the news-channels. including FOX are all in swept off their feet in love. She calls it "Democratic Socialism". I call it "Bend Over Here It Comes Again".
This unexpected event becomes somewhat easier to understand when you realize that it took place in a state so full of regressively stupid idiots that it keeps sending that oily reptile Charles E. Schumer (in an effort to butch up, he wants you to call him Chuck) to Washington, D. C. Except that Chuckles has a problem now: apparently the Democratic Socialist Party doesn't really consider itself a part of the Democrat Party, and is grimly determined to suck as many votes from the older party this November as it can, reducing the foolishly anticipated "Blue Wave" to a bloopy piddle and enhancing Donald Trump's hold on Congress. Bernie Sanders, that fatuous hypocritical moron has assured them he will help.
"From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." Not only is it bad politics and bad economics, it is profoundly immoral, and the reason the Soviet Empire collapsed. I work extremely hard, and have done so all my life, producing books that are as full of action, adventure, good ideas, decent philosophy, and even a little sex as I can make them. But why in the sacred name of John Moses Browning should I do that if some government gangster is going to steal the pittance they earn, or even the books themselves as a pitiable- handful of addled simpletons who falsely call themselves libertarians desire?
And if the same thing happens to every other productive individual in society, why the hell should any of us work? Maybe we should all just kick back, chill out, and watch civilization disintegrate the way it has in so many other places? It gets tempting, sometimes. It's said that, in the days just before the Soviet Empire fell, the majority of men in Moscow were alcoholics.
I'm having beer.
Yes, socialism is an evil notion and I don't believe there's any significant moral difference between it and, say, communism. It's the same menace we and our fathers believed we were fighting and killing and dying over in Vietnam and Korea. Nazi Germany was a socialist regime, as well. If those struggles had been expressly spelled out in those terms, we might even have won the last two. But the trouble was, most of the United States' 20th century leaders were socialists, themselves, at heart. Name me just one, possibly excepting Ronald Reagan, who wasn't. Socialism and all of its mealy-mouthed, weasel-worded variations are collectivism, under which the putative rights of the group coercively supersede those of the individual. But the group, as such, has no rights, beyond those of its constituent members. All rights are individual and are not at all additive in character.
I've been saying and writing this stuff for more than half a century, ever since "I wore a younger man's clothes", but with only my tiny, two-inch soapbox, here, to stand on. I need your help to spread the word. Western Civilization needs your help. It's time now for every individualist in America who gives a rusty fuck (to quote the great Rod Steiger) to declare war on domestic socialism.
It sure as hell has declared war on you.
No quarter, Alexandria, no quarter.
