He fled Kabul in 2001 and went with Osam bin Ladento Tora Bora. He was listed as a co-conspirator in the 2004 Madrid bombings. In Libya he received weapons from Qatar approved by Obama. He became the military commander of the Tripoli Military Council in August 2011 and was responsible for security at all foreign embassies.

He began training rebel forces in Derna in April of 2011.
