Thank you for this, Powell. Is pneumonia a separate illness or a symptom of other infections?

It is a symptom: Inflammation of the lungs due to the release of histamines and other substances involved in innate immunity in response to an infection. Actually dissolving of the layer of the lungs in this case as the virus is released from the cells lining the lungs. This diminishes the capacity of the lungs to exchange oxygen and in extreme cases leads to "drowning." More frequently it can lead to a secondary bacterial infection in the lungs (or even anther virus such as Adenovirus) that can be the cause of death.

Interesting. That definitely changes things.

I thought the WHO was saying 7 (or 8) deaths due to this influenza and 100+ who had succumbed to pneumonia and, oh by the way, also had this flu (as if the flu compromised them to the point that pneumonia could set in). Or, I suppose the influenza could compromise the immune system and let a different bacterial or viral pneumonia in the back door.

Why is there such a big difference in the "death due to" number?

Thanks very much for this.

Question: would it be a good idea to treat the onset of this flu with garlic-because of its antibacterial- fighting ability; I mean, should a person treat this with anti-viral AND anti-bacterial (like garlic) for insurance?
