The Myth of Democracy in America

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

In the US, the term democracy is the most over-hyped, misused, inappropriate, debauched one used time and again to claim what doesn't exist and isn't tolerated by its ruling class.

From inception, the notion was and remains pure fantasy.

No rule of the people ever existed  in the US— not now or earlier.

The country has always been run of, by, and for its privileged class at the expense of most others.

The false notions of American exceptionalism, moral superiority, and democratic rule are deceptively drummed into the public mind from grade school to adulthood to the grave.

It's tossed around by politicians, academia, Hollywood, the clergy, media commentators, round-the-clock television rubbish, even young and older ordinary people who've been manipulated by relentless brainwashing.

The US is an increasingly totalitarian police state that's worlds apart from democracy the way it's supposed to be.

The world's richest nation is indifferent toward and abusive of its ordinary people — especially people of color, the "wrong" religions and ideologies, as well as everyone most disadvantaged.

What nation called democratic tolerates an unprecedented wealth disparity between its privileged class and ordinary people that keeps widening to greater extremes.

Which one permits unemployment of over one-fourth of its working class, underemployment of most others, growing poverty, food insecurity, hunger and overall deprivation while its privileged class never had things better.

No one party state with two right wings was ever considered democratic in world history — except in the US.

What nation ever pretended that good times lie ahead during the Greatest Depression in its history that continues worsening, not improving — because its ruling class shuns ordinary people to serve privileged ones exclusively?

What nation calling itself democratic ever rigged elections to assure dirty business as usual continuity always wins?

When did a true blue democrat ever serve in the US highest office and key congressional posts?

The closest president to this standard perhaps was Jack Kennedy.

A conservative, not a liberal, according to Gore Vidal who knew him.

He was eliminated by CIA hitmen because he supported what's contrary to US imperial aims.

The world's richest nation USA not only ill-serves and exploits its ordinary people to serve privileged ones, it insatiably seeks more of what it already has by waging war on other nations by hot and other means with no end of its imperial rage in prospect.

Its permanent war on humanity and homeland police state rule are the greatest threats to everyone everywhere.

If things go on unchecked, it's just a matter of time before full-blown tyranny under martial law replaces the rule of law entirely – on the phony pretext of protecting national security at a time when the nation's only threats are invented.

No real ones existed since WW II ended in summer 1945.

Over 75 years later, world peace, stability, equity, justice, and the rule of law were never more threatened because of US rage for controlling planet earth, its resources, and populations by brute force if other ways don't work.

Most everything freedom-loving people cherish is threatened with elimination.

Myths perpetuated by government, establishment media, academia, and most other sources of information consistently lie and otherwise deceive.

Government in the US is hostile to the rights and welfare of ordinary people at home and abroad.

Ignoring US fantasy democracy, pretending Election 2020 was open, free and fair — a rigged process, not the real thing — the NYT defied reality by falsely claiming:

"The machinery of American democracy worked this year (sic)."

"(F)or the most part, (things) went smoothly (sic)."

"America's pandemic election was a remarkable, unlikely feat (sic)."

"The election was a feat, conducted under assault from the president (sic)."

"Trump also undermined pillars of democracy this year (sic)."

According to a quoted former Bush/Cheney official: "(W)e can be proud about how well our election officials conducted this election under extremely adverse circumstances."

Like virtually all other establishment media, the Times perpetuates the myth of democracy in America.

According to author Ferdinand Lundberg's book "The Myth of Democracy" in the US,  it only exists in town meetings — not in federal, state and local governments.

Lundberg wrote his book over 30 years ago. Given how greatly things deteriorate since its publication, imagine what he'd say now.

Governance in America at all levels is run by and for privileged interests at the expense of the public welfare.

It's always been this way. The supreme law of the land is how its ruling authorities define it, according to how it serves their interests.

The US is run by officials who lie, connive, misinterpret and pretty much operate ad libitum, discharging their duties as they see fit.

"We the people" is part of mass deception. Ordinary people are exploited to serve privileged ones.

That's how US fantasy democracy works — wrapped in the American flag.

Reality is worlds apart from perpetuated mass deception.
