The Latest Dubious Russian Hacking Claim

According to US National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot:

The Trump regime "is aware of…reports of" alleged foreign hacking into US government networks within the National Telecommunications and Information Administration — allegedly affecting Treasury, Commerce, and other departments.

Ullyot added that "all necessary steps (are being taken) to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation."

WaPo headlined the following:

"Russian government hackers are behind a broad espionage campaign that has compromised US agencies, including Treasury and Commerce," adding:

"(A) global espionage campaign that stretches back months. The FBI is looking into a "hacking group working for the Russian foreign intelligence service, SVR (sic)." 

According to Reuters, "(h)ackers believed to be working for Russia (sic) have been monitoring internal email traffic at the US Treasury and Commerce departments, according to people familiar with the matter, adding they feared the hacks uncovered so far may be the tip of the iceberg."

The NYT and other US major media pointed fingers at Russia.

No evidence was cited by US officials or in media reports to verify alleged hacking or by whom if any occurred.

The Commerce Department claimed a breach occurred — with no further elaboration cited, just a brief statement, saying:

"We have asked the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI to investigate, and we cannot comment further at this time.

Former Trump regime Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director Christopher Krebs said no evidence of foreign interference in Election 2020 was found.

In response to the above claims, Russia's Washington embassy issued the following statement:

"We paid attention to another unfounded attempt of the US media to blame Russia for hacker attacks on US governmental bodies." 

"We declare responsibly: malicious activities in the information space contradicts the principles of the Russian foreign policy, national interests and our understanding of interstate relations." 

"Russia does not conduct offensive operations in the cyber domain."

"What is more, the Russian Federation actively promotes bilateral and multilateral cyber security agreements." 

"In this regard, we would like to remind (the) American(s) of the initiative put forward by President Vladimir Putin on September 25 on a comprehensive program of measures to restore Russian-US cooperation in the field of international information security." 

"We have received no reply from Washington." 

"Many our other suggestions to start constructive and equal dialogue with the US remain unanswered."

Time and again when accusations are made against Russia, China, Iran, and other nations free from US control, later information refutes them as bogus.

Finger-pointing at Russia above appears to be the latest example of an unacceptable, longstanding smear campaign from US public and private sources.

When accusations aren't supported by verifiable evidence from independent sources, they lack credibility.
