Hostile IAEA Board of Governors Resolution on Iran

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Has IAEA leadership been co-opted by hostile to Iran regimes in the US, Israel, Britain, France and Germany?

Did the nuclear watchdog abandon its independence in deference to their hardline anti-Iran policies?

Iran's legitimate nuclear program is the world's most intensively monitored one — despite having no military component earlier or now.

In sharp contrast, nuclear outlaws USA and Israel permit no inspections of their nuclear weapons development and production facilities that pose an unparalleled threat to humanity.

On June 19, the 35-nation IAEA Board of Governors passed an unacceptable resolution on Iran.

Introduced by Britain, France and Germany in deference to hostile to Iran US/Israeli interests, it was adopted by a 25 - 2 margin, 7 nations abstaining.

Russia and China were the only profiles in courage against what no nations should support. See below.

BoG member states supporting the measure were pressured, bullied, or bribed by the Trump regime to adopt what demanded rejection.

Its content is based on falsified information supplied by the Trump and Netanyahu regimes, perpetuating the myth of an Iranian nuclear threat that doesn't exist — not now or earlier.

Ahead of Friday's vote, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif warned against adopting the hostile measure, tweeting:

"BoG should not allow JCPOA enemies to jeopardize Iran's supreme interests."

"E3 (France, German and UK) should not be an accessory, after failing own JCPOA duties."

"We've nothing to hide. More inspections in Iran over last 5 yrs than in IAEA history."

"An agreeable solution is possible, but Res will ruin it."

Separately, Zarif tweeted on Friday:

"E3 must stop public face-saving & muster the courage to state publicly what they admit privately: their failure to fulfill even own JCPOA duties due to total impotence in resisting US bullying."

"Behind facade, E3 are accessories to Trump & Netanyahu—& in no position to counsel Iran."

Zarif's spokesman Abbas Mousavi added:

"While the Islamic Republic of Iran has the highest level of cooperation with the IAEA, issuance of the resolution is a completely unconstructive and disappointing move."

"Magnifying the Agency's requests by some governments, led by the US, is a clear attempt to create a new crisis for cooperation between Iran and the IAEA."

"The resolution is a clear excessive demand by the US and the three European states, and the Islamic Republic of Iran does not accept any excessive ambitions by any country or organization."

In response to the resolution's adoption, Iran's envoy to the IAEA Kazem Gharibabadi slammed the hostile measure, saying:

The unacceptable "BoG move neither encourage Iran to grant access to the Agency based on fabricated and unfounded allegations nor will it force Iran to come down from its principal positions."

"Iran categorically deplores this resolution and will take appropriate action in response, the repercussions of which would be upon the sponsors of this resolution."

The Trump and Netanyahu regimes are at war on Iran by other means.

E3 countries are complicit by flagrantly breaching their JCPOA obligations — along with their latest move on Friday, heightening regional tensions instead of fostering peace, stability, and cooperation with nonbelligerent Iran.

Since December last year, Rafael Grossi has been IAEA director general.

Before Friday's BoG vote, he falsely accused Iran of refusing to "cooperate immediately and fully" with its monitoring.

Pressured by the Trump regime, the IAEA demands access to two Iranian sites based on fabricated US/Israeli claims of hidden nuclear materials no credible evidence suggests exist.

Iranian officials justifiably refuse to cooperate with unacceptable demands.

Time and again, they stressed their willingness to meet all commitments and obligations under international law and agreements.

They will not bend to unacceptable or extrajudicial pressure, bullying, or other hostile tactics.

No evidence suggests Iran is not in full compliance with its NPT and JCPOA obligations.

Plenty of evidence shows the US and Israel are nuclear outlaws.

Why hasn't the IAEA BoG adopted a resolution condemning their actions?

Russia's envoy to the IAEA Mikhail Ulyanov slammed the  BoG resolution a day ahead of its adoption, saying:

"It is perfectly obvious from the director-general's report that Iran is not allowing access to these locations while it is not denying it to the secretariat."

"Tehran needs additional consultations to make a positive decision."

"This is normal and fairly acceptable. We urge both the IAEA secretariat and Iran to continue the discussion without delay and achieve a positive result as soon as possible."

"Thousands of verifications have been held in Iran in the past few years."

"Iran has granted access to these sites hundreds of additional times and provided all the necessary cooperation on every occasion."

No evidence suggests "the risk of proliferation" by Iran.

"It is merely assumed that undeclared experiments with small quantities of nuclear material may have been conducted on (the two) sites (in question) about 20 years ago."

"Even if this were true, Iran completely stopped these activities at its own initiative in 2004. This case cannot be extrapolated to the present."

The BoG resolution has "little to do with the risk of nuclear proliferation" that doesn't exist.

In December 2015 under its previous director general Yukiya Amano, the BoG "closed the file on Iran's alleged past nuclear activities."

It's unacceptably reopened because of hostile to Iran demands by regimes in the US, Israel, and E3 countries.

Russia called "(d)eparture from…2015 consensus…unacceptable."

China's envoy to the IAEA Wang Qun said Trump regime "unilateral and bullying" maximum pressure is responsible for the BoG resolution.

Questioning its legal legitimacy, he stressed that adoption could "be the basis for further actions in the Security Council, leading to the ultimate termination of the JCPOA."

That's precisely the aim of the Trump and Netanyahu regimes, part of a greater scheme to weaken and isolate Iran internationally.

Britain, France, Germany, and Brussels are willing co-conspirators.

They breached their JCPOA obligations and introduced the hostile BoG resolution in deference to illegal Trump regime maximum pressure on Iran.

Its adoption risks further hostile actions to follow.
