IAEA Bending to Hostile Trump and Netanyahu Regimes on Iran?

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Established in 1957, the nuclear watchdog IAEA is mandated to promote peaceful uses of this energy source — independent from political influence.

It's beholden to the world community of nations, not one or some to the exclusion of or at the expense of others.

Iran's legitimate nuclear related sites are more heavily monitored than any other nations that operate these type facilities.

Its authorities cooperate fully with IAEA inspectors.

Nuclear outlaws USA and Israel prohibit the IAEA from going anywhere near their nuclear weapons development and production sites.

They demand monitoring in contrast to Iran, a nation the whole world knows conforms fully to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and JCPOA.

Since establishing a legitimate nuclear program in the 1950s, aided by the US Atoms for Peace program at the time, Iranian nuclear activities had and still have no military components.

On Monday after an IAEA Board of Governor's meeting, director general Mariano Grossi unacceptably demanded access to two Iranian sites — based on US/Israeli fabricated claims of hidden nuclear materials no credible evidence suggests exist.

Iran's envoy to the agency  Kazem Gharibabadi accused its Board of Governors of bending to the will of Washington, three European countries, and Israel that are either armed with these weapons or allow Pentagon nukes on their territory.

Gharibabadi slammed the "totally unconstructive (hostile to Iran IAEA) measure," breaching its mandate in deference to nations enforcing or going along with illegal sanctions on the country.

"Naturally, if such a resolution, which clearly involves American objectives, is passed, the Islamic Republic of Iran will have to take the necessary measures proportionally, and its responsibility will lie with those who have adopted such political and destructive approaches," he warned.

He stressed that requests for access by IAEA inspectors to Iranian sites must be made in compliance with the 1997 Additional Protocol.

It was approved by its Board of Governors to provide additional tools for verifying legitimate nuclear activities.

"(W)e are working in broad and transparent cooperation with the IAEA, but it does not mean that we would agree to every request from the IAEA on the basis of the bogus claims of our enemies. No other country would do that either," Gharibabadi stressed.

Based on US-led pressure hostile to Iran, Grossi unacceptably demanded "prompt access" to sites where he said undeclared nuclear materials may be stored — despite no evidence suggesting it.

On Monday, Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabini said the following:

"We firmly emphasize that we are meeting all our international commitments, as confirmed by the 17 positive reports of IAEA in recent years, and we are (fully complying with the world's) most transparent activities," adding:

"We have always been prepared to provide the (IAEA) with the necessary access to (our nuclear facilities) in accordance with previous valid agreements and international regulations."

"We expect the members of the IAEA's Board of Governors to support the independence of this international body against US bullying."

"We warn that using political criteria in dealing with the tasks and rights of countries in the IAEA will result in nothing but the breakdown of trust and the growth of instability in the global arena."

Rabiei stressed that US/Israeli claims about hidden Iranian nuclear materials were fabricated and have no validity.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi tweeted:

"As it was warned time & time again that 'a bully will get bully-er if you succumb,' the American bully now bites its EU allies."

"The US habit of aggressive law-breaking will only lead to global chaos."

"When will the world grasp the reality & rise up against this bully? #nordstream2"

On Monday, IAEA director general Grossi explained that Iran remains in full compliance with the JCPOA, saying:

"To date, the (IAEA) has not observed any changes to Iran's implementation of its nuclear-related commitments…or in the level of cooperation by Iran in relation to (IAEA) verification and monitoring activities under the JCPOA."

In response to his demand for access to two Iranian sites because of US/Israeli pressure, Mousavi said the following:

"Should an unconstructive decision as such be taken, Iran is likely to respond with a proportionate reaction," adding:

"They can probably guess what Iran's reaction will be."

No nation more fully cooperates with the IAEA than Iran.

It won't tolerate unacceptable agency demands based on fabricated US/Israeli claims, an earlier Iranian mission to the IAEA statement saying the following:

"The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that merely forwarding some papers based on (US/Israeli) Intelligence Services' fabricated information is not consistent with the agency's Statute, Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, and the Additional Protocol."

Tehran will "not…set a bad precedence by giving legitimacy to such alleged information and even considers it counterproductive for the credibility of the Agency, to the detriment of its relations with the Member States."

Iran will continue to cooperate with the IAEA and fulfill its obligations — short of abandoning its sovereign rights.

Ignoring its own illegal nuclear arsenal, Israel time and again falsely accused Iran's nuclear program of having a military component.

It never did, doesn't now, and no credible evidence suggests otherwise.
