Media Criticism of Turkish Aggression Rings Hollow

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Throughout the post-WW II era, the US used Kurds, then abandoned them when no longer serving its interests — Trump regime betrayal the latest example.

Throughout years of US aggression in Syria since early 2011, the Obama and Trump regimes used Kurdish YPG fighters as proxies against Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity — making them complicit with US aggression.

US occupation and terror-bombing Syrian targets have nothing to do with combatting the scourge of ISIS Washington supports, along with likeminded regional jihadists.

Establishment media pretend otherwise. They never met a US war of aggression they didn't wholeheartedly support and cheerlead.

They firmly back the highest of high crimes of war, against humanity and genocide committed by US and allied forces by failing to report and condemn them.

Compared to endless US wars of aggression, proxy wars, sanctions wars, tariffs wars, economic terrorism, and other high crimes throughout most of the post-WW II era on an unprecedented scale, responsible for vast destruction and millions killed worldwide, Turkish aggression in Syria is minor by comparison.

By no means am I condoning it, just the opposite. I strongly condemn aggression in all forms whether large or small scale.

Critical media headlines of Turkish cross-border operations ring hollow, notably by ignoring the highest of high US crimes over the longest duration in modern times and devastating harm on millions of victims and their nations.

Here's a sampling of establishment media criticism of Turkey:

NYT: "Turkey Launches Offensive Against US-Backed Syrian Militia"

NYT: "Death Toll Climbs as Turkish Offensive in Syria Enters 2nd Day"

Never throughout years of Obama's war, now Trump's, did the Times explain US culpability — nor its support for ISIS and/or likeminded jihadists as Pentagon/CIA proxy fighters against the Syrian Arab Republic, Iraq, Libya, and elsewhere — against nonbelligerent nations threatening no one.

The same goes for the entire US-led Western/Israeli media establishment — blaming victims of US aggression for crimes committed against them.

More headlines:

Washington Post: "Turkey launches offensive against US-allied Kurdish forces"

WSJ: "Turkey Begins Offensive Against US Ally in Syria"

AP News: "Turkey begins offensive against Kurdish fighters in Syria"

Reuters: "Turkish offensive begins in Kurdish-held Syria"

Reuters: "Turkey opens ground assault on Syria's Kurds"

Fox News: "Turkey announces northern Syria invasion of ground forces; multiple civilians reported dead"

CNN: "Turkey's attack hurting fight against ISIS" — waged only by Syrian and Russian forces against the US supported scourge left unexplained.

CBS News: "Turkey invades Syria"

BBC: "Turkey launches ground offensive in northern Syria"

Al Jazeera: "Turkey begins ground offensive in northeastern Syria"

All of the above reports and countless others criticize Turkish operations only because they're against a US proxy force — now abandoned for higher priorities.

In contrast, when the US attacks nonbelligerent nations threatening no one, its aggression is falsely glorified as liberating struggles, peacemaking initiatives, democracy building, economic development, and other deceptive rationalizations, ignoring cold, hard reality about what's going on.

Targeted nations were peaceful before US aggression raped and destroyed them.

What demands screaming headlines is reinvented to support might makes right, the US global war OF terror, not on it, ignored.

Establishment media operate as virtual press agents for powerful interests, especially when the US goes to war and in their run-up — the rule of law and human toll ignored.
