High-Profile Hong Kong Protesters Arrested

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Hong Kong protests have been ongoing since late March, US dirty hands all over them.

What began against an extradition bill to the mainland continued endlessly after the measure was indefinitely suspended — showing it was an orchestrated pretext to destabilize China all along.

China's Foreign Ministry accused the Trump regime of "interference in China's internal affairs." The US president knows nothing more about what's going on than what his hardline handlers tell him, along with Fox News rubbish, his favorite TV channel.

It showed by his mid-August remark, tweeting: "I have ZERO doubt that if President Xi wants to quickly and humanely solve the Hong Kong problem, he can do it."

How much longer they'll continue remains unknown. Beijing is reluctant to overreact, largely letting city authorities handle things.

US congressional members back disruptive Hong Kong protests. In June, HR 3289 was introduced — the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 by the world's leading human rights abuser on a global scale USA.

Similar legislation was proposed earlier but not passed. Its Orwellian language states that it's "to renew the historical commitment of the United States to uphold freedom and democracy in Hong Kong at a time when its autonomy is increasingly under assault (sic)."

The US tolerates these principles nowhere, especially not at home. The resolution calls for "punitive measures against government officials in Hong Kong or mainland China who are responsible for suppressing basic freedoms in Hong Kong…"

It's all about waging war on China by other means, the same tactic used by the US against all nations it doesn't control — illegally meddling in their internal affairs.

US media march in lockstep with Washington's imperial agenda, especially its wars of aggression and other hostile actions against other nations.

NYT editors falsely claimed "protesters in Hong Kong are not…pro-Western troublemakers," calling them "young people…who ardently don't want to come further under the repressive rule of the Chinese Communists."

They're serving US imperial interests, harming their own by protracted involvement in what's going on.

Irish journalist Danielle Ryan explained CNN's support for the protests, publishing a guide on "items (to) bring and wear to stay safe."

A list includes "goggles, black T-shirt, water, shin pads, sport shoes, hard hat, gas mask, backpack, gloves, umbrella, phone, towel (and) change of clothes."

Journalism the way it should be was long ago abandoned in the West, CNN the most untrustworthy name in television rubbish masquerading as news.

On Friday, Hong Kong police announced the arrests of three high-profile protesters — Joshua Wong, Andy Chan, and Agnes Chow, others arrested with them.

Wong earlier met with US consulate in Hong Kong political chief Julie Eadeh. Earlier involved in city protests, he was arrested and sentenced to community service for disruptive actions.

Wong, Chow, Chan and others were arrested for involvement in unlawful assembly and rioting.

Rick Hui Yui-yu was arrested for obstructing police in the execution of their duties.

Arrests were made ahead of a banned Saturday mass protest. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi called what's going on more disruptive and violent than anything in the city since returned to China in 1997.

What's going on in Hong Kong has nothing to do with seeking democracy, everything to do with US efforts to destabilize China.

Tactics are familiar, used time and again by US regimes against nations on their target list for regime change.

China matters most to bipartisan hardliners in Washington because it's a growing economic, industrial, technological, and military powerhouse — the leading challenge to US hegemonic aims.

It's why US war secretary Mark Esper called the Indo/Pacific the "primary (US) theater."

Obama's so-called Asia pivot, continued by Trump, is all about asserting America's regional presence, advancing its military footprint in a part of the world not its own.

It's trying to check China and Russia regionally, provocatively surrounding their countries with US military bases, wanting them contained and isolated, risking confrontation with one or both nations.

Cold War containment never ended, China and Russia prime US targets, followed by Iran, Venezuela, and other sovereign independent countries.

The US has been rebalancing East Asia for years. Strategy calls for strengthening military, economic, and political ties with Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Singapore and Vietnam.

It involves undermining Chinese and Russian influence, isolating them from neighbors, and asserting Washington's dominance over territories and waters not its own.

Noted investment manager Ray Dalio compares events today to the 1935 - 1945 period, Great Depression years ahead of WW II.

Devastating world war followed years of economic crisis. The global economy is softening today.

US war by other means on other nations, notably China, Russia and Iran, risks another possible global war.

If coming it could be between nuclear-armed nations. The power of their arsenals can destroy planet earth and all its life forms many times over.
