Raging Media Propaganda War on Venezuela

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Acting as imperial press agents, US major media have been hostile to Venezuelan social democracy since establishment of the Bolivarian Republic with Hugo Chavez's December 1998 election.

Their mission is to lie, deceive and distort, reporting state-approved propaganda rubbish, suppressing hard truths — polar opposite what journalism is supposed to be, long ago abandoned by the NYT, other print, and electronic media.

Collectively they're the shame of the nation, the closest thing to an official US ministry of propaganda on issues mattering most, notably geopolitical ones.

The NYT is in the vanguard of waging propaganda war on Venezuela, vilifying its social democracy, supporting its US directed fascist opposition.

Trump regime war on Venezuela by other means caused severe economic duress, exacerbated by the grand theft of state assets and low oil prices, along with fear of possible US direct or proxy war.

What's going on is illegal collective punishment of ordinary Venezuelans, flagrantly violating international law the US repeatedly breaches.

In reporting on conditions in Venezuela, the NYT blames its government for lawless US actions against the country, its economic duress largely made in the USA, a deliberate policy of wanting its ordinary people harmed, especially its most disadvantaged.

According to the Times, it's all about "poor governance, corruption and misguided policies of President Nicolas Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez" — ignoring US war by other means for the past 20 years, greatly escalated by Trump regime hardliners.

The Times lied claiming "armed gangs took control of entire towns, public services collapsed," Maduro to blame for what's going on — paying short shrift to US sanctions war, aiming to crush the economy extrajudicially.

Intensely waged financial war can be more devastating than standing armies, war by other means, destroying middle class societies, wanting nations brought to their knees without firing a shot, the human toll of no consequence, a US strategy used time and again against governments it wants toppled, wanting them replaced by subservient puppet regimes.

Washington's imperial agenda is all about wanting control over other nations, their resources and populations.

It's about wanting labor rights abolished, marketplace tyranny instituted everywhere, societies transformed into democracy-free zones under rules written by US monied interests for maximum profit-making.

It's about wanting ruler-serf societies everywhere with an unprecedented chasm between filthy rich and desperately poor. Inside the bubble is paradise for large investors and other privileged interests.

Outside is dystopian hell. Its features include fantasy democracy, Dickensian social injustice, deplorable inequality, grinding poverty, mass unemployment and underemployment, homelessness, hunger, Big Brother surveillance, mass incarceration, disappearing human and civil rights, along with brutal crackdowns on dissent.

All of the above is what fascist tyranny, totalitarian control, and neoliberal harshness are all about — the interests of wealth, power, and privilege served at the expense of most others.

Money power concentrated in private hands assures the worst of all possible worlds – including endless wars, punishing inequality, and barbarous repression.

The NYT and other major media support all of the above over governance of, by, and for everyone equitably, notions they abhor.

They support grand theft Venezuela, stealing a nation, eliminating its sovereignty, controlling its resources, abolishing its democratic governance, oppressing its people.

The Times: "Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves. But its oil output (plummeted) in the past year" — failing to lay blame where it largely belongs.

Waging sanctions war, the Trump regime threatened nations not to buy Venezuelan oil, the same action taken against Iran, flagrant violations of international law the Times ignores.

It consistently blames victimized nations for lawless US actions against them, including political, economic, financial, sanctions, and hot wars.

What's going on in Venezuela, Iran, Syria, and other nations attacked by the US is what the scourge of imperialism is all about.

The Times and other major media support what demands condemnation.
