US War on Iran by Other Means

by Stephen Lendman

Longstanding US hostility toward Iran is all about its sovereign independence, its unwillingness to subordinate its sovereignty to US interests, opposition to Washington's war on humanity, along with support for fundamental Palestinian rights.

On Wednesday, a suicide attack on an Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) bus in Iran's southeast killed 27, injuring over a dozen others.

The so-called US-supported Jaish ul-Adl terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Founded in 2012, Iran, India and Japan designated it a terrorist organization. In April 2017, it claimed responsibility for killing or  wounding around a dozen Islamic Republic security forces involved in patrolling the Iran/Pakistan border.

It took credit for other attacks, killing Iranian military personnel and civilians, along with kidnapping incidents.

Iran's IRGC issued a statement, condemning Wednesday's attack, calling it revenge for the failure of foreign plots related to the nation's 40th anniversary commemorations of its 1979 revolution, ending a generation of US-installed fascist tyranny.

The IRGC said a bus with military personnel was attacked by a car laden with explosive material on the road between Zahedan and Khash in the southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province near the Pakistan border.

Iran vowed to retaliate against those responsible, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi saying "the self-sacrificing Iranian military and intelligence personnel will take revenge for the martyrs of this incident."

Iranian Defense Minister General Amir Hatami said "effort(s) to impair the integrity of the Islamic Republic, which has become a regional power and a role model in countering terrorism and arrogance, will come to no avail," adding:

"The terrorists should know the strongest revenge awaits them." Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed the same thing, saying the following:

"The criminal mercenaries and agents of the enemies of Iran could not tolerate the immense gathering and glorious presence of our fellow Iranians on the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution, and displayed the depth of their helplessness by  (Wednesday's) savage attack," adding:

"This crime is another shame in the dark history of the main sponsors of terrorism at the White House, Tel Aviv, and their regional agents who are" supporting the scourge of terrorism they pretend to oppose.

"Without a doubt, all perpetrators and those who ordered this vicious, flagrant act will be punished soon…"

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted it's "no coincidence that Iran is hit by terror on the very day that #WarsawCircus begins" - referring to the February 13 and 14 anti-Iran conference in Warsaw, Poland.

The ministerial meeting has nothing to do with promoting "peace and security in the Middle East" as falsely claimed by the Trump regime.

Co-hosted by Mike Pompeo and his Polish counterpart Jacek Czaputowicz, it's all about destabilizing Iran, part of the Trump regime's plot to try undermining its government, wanting it toppled, wanting the Islamic Republic returned to US client state status.

It's also about pressuring participating countries to weaken political and economic ties to China. Ahead of the conference, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif tweeted:

"Reminder to host/participants of anti-Iran conference: those who attended last US anti-Iran show are either dead, disgraced, or marginalized. And Iran is stronger than ever."

"While Iran saved Poles in WWII, it now hosts desperate (a) anti-Iran circus." Separately, he called the Warsaw conference "dead on arrival or dead before arrival…another (US) attempt…to pursue an obsession with Iran that is not well-founded."

Despotic Arab regimes are attending. So is apartheid Israel and Mike Pence. Britain, France and Germany sent low-level representatives. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini is notably absent.

The London Guardian's foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall slammed the event, saying it shows "how far (the Trump regime) is from the rest of the West."

A Final Comment

According to the NYT, "(t)he Trump White House has accelerated a secret American program to sabotage Iran's missiles and rockets, according to current and former administration officials, who described it as part of an expanding campaign by the United States to undercut Tehran's military and isolate its economy."

The scheme begun under Bush/Cheney involves sabotaging Iranian missile and rocket launches. The two most recent ones on January 15 and February 5 failed within minutes of launch.

Since 2008, most launches failed. In early January, Pompeo turned truth on its head, claiming Iran's legitimate ballistic and cruise missile development programs threaten international security, adding:

The nation's military "plans to fire off space launch vehicles with virtually the same technology as ICBMs." Iran threatens no other countries, he failed to explain.

US-dominated NATO and Israel threaten world peace. Last September, John Bolton said the Trump regime authorized "offensive cyber operations" against US adversaries.

They've been ongoing for many years, Russia, China and Iran prime targets. US war on these countries remains an ominous possibility, North Korea as well if denuclearization talks fail.

They achieved nothing so far since last June because of unacceptable Trump regime demands in return for hollow promises.
