Turkey Pretends to Cooperate with Russia Against Terrorists in Syria It Supports

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Turkey supports ISIS, al-Nusra, and other terrorists in Syria it pretends to oppose.

Russia pretends Turkey opposes these cutthroat killers, knowing the Erdogan regime is part of the problem in Syria, wanting Assad toppled like the US, NATO, Israel, and other regional rogue states.

On Monday, Putin and Erdogan met in Sochi, Russia, discussing the situation of terrorist-infested Idlib ahead of a ground offensive by mobilized Syrian forces to liberate the province - greatly aided by Russian airpower, sorties begun last week.

Erdogan opposes Idlib's liberation, siding with the Trump regime and its anti-Syria allies, pretending otherwise.

Previous talks with Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani failed to achieve common objectives, Monday's meeting unlikely to resolve major differences.

Both leaders are world's apart on Syria. Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov downplayed their disagreement, acknowledging "differences in (their) approach" on Idlib.

Erdogan supports terrorists in Syria, opposes Assad, as well as the Syrian Arab Republic's sovereignty and territorial integrity - polar opposite Putin's position on these issues.

The Turkish despot lied saying "(w)e fight against all terror groups (including) in Idlib." He's given them safe haven throughout most of the war, letting them freely cross back and forth between Turkey and Syria, supplying them with heavy weapons and other material support.

The solution in Idlib and throughout Syria is eliminating ISIS, al-Nusra, and other cutthroat killer terrorists, along with ending the presence of US, UK, French, and Turkish forces, illegally occupying parts of Syria - an agenda the Trump regime and its imperial allies oppose.

Russia and Iran are guarantors of unattained ceasefire in Syria, an objective Erdogan opposes while pretending otherwise.

Large numbers of heavily armed Turkish troops illegally occupy northern Syrian territory. Erdogan's claim about deploying them at the request of Syrian people is a bald-faced lie.

Syria's envoy to the UN in Geneva Hussam Eddin Ala blasted the duplicitous, hugely biased, pro-Western/anti-Assad UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on the Syrian Arab Republic.

In cahoots with Washington, NATO and their imperial allies, it consistently downplays atrocities committed by US-supported terrorists, largely blaming them on Damascus.

During an earlier General Assembly session, Syria's UN envoy Bashar al-Jaafari minced no words, accusing the COI of "deliberately blowing things out of proportion when displaying its findings," adding:

The COI largely ignores "blood-curdling scenes that flagrantly contravene the Syrians' dignity and human rights regarding the crimes of the armed terrorist groups, ranging from eating human flesh, cutting throats, mutilating bodies, beheadings on sectarian and confessional grounds, throwing bodies from rooftops to committing hundreds of suicide bombings using car bombs in populated areas, recruiting children, abducting and slaughtering clergymen, assassinating scholars in mosques, issuing instigative fatwas on 'sexual jihad,' killing children on the charges of infidelity, robbing factories and transporting them to Turkey."

On Monday, Hussam Eddin Ala said his government "deplores the (COI's) politicized report's approach to the war crimes and violations of international law committed by the Turkish regime and its mercenaries in northern Syria, and the crimes of the illegal US-led international coalition forces, its allies and mercenaries in northeastern Syria," adding:

"The Syrian Arab Republic deplores the reports of the commission regarding the deliberate targeting of populated areas and their attempts to justify the deliberate premeditated shelling of residential neighborhoods in Damascus by terrorist groups, and calls upon it to stop relying on the accounts of biased parties and governments hostile to the Syrian government."

"The government of the Syrian Arab Republic has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to the rules of international humanitarian law in all operations carried out by the Syrian armed forces and has taken all possible measures to protect civilians during the liberation of their areas from the domination of armed terrorist groups in Eastern Ghouta, southern Syria and other areas."

He denounced maliciously fabricated US/NATO/UN reports, disgracefully blaming Damascus for CW attacks carried out by US supported terrorists - another CW false flag imminent in Idlib, a pretext for US-led terror-bombing of Syrian forces in the province.

US-led NATO warships in the Eastern Mediterranean close to Syria's border await Pentagon orders to attack its troops in Idlib, following a US-UK orchestrated CW false flag wrongfully blamed on Assad.

The Trump regime and it imperial partners intend to blame Assad for any CW incident carried out by terrorists they support, vowing to escalate aggression in the country more than already - risking direct confrontation with Russia.

A Final Comment

Following Monday talks, Putin said Moscow and Ankara agreed on establishing a demilitarized zone in northern Idlib province before mid-October, controlled by Russian and Turkish forces, military operations by Syrian troops prohibited in the area.

Both leaders agreed on withdrawing opposition fighters from a 15 - 20 km-wide zone in Syrian territory along the Turkish border.

Damascus expressed "general support." Eliminating terrorists in Idlib and elsewhere in Syria remains a firm Russian, Syrian and Iranian objective - Turkey the outlier, along with the Trump regime and its other imperial partners, supporting the scourge it pretends to oppose.
