Meaningless Greek Recognition of Palestinian Statehood

by Stephen Lendman

Greece's SYRIZA ruling authority is a model Judas regime, exclusively serving powerful Western monied interests after promising its long-suffering people relief from punishing Troika-imposed austerity, more severe now than earlier.

During a visit by illegitimate Israeli-appointed Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, Greek parliamentarians unanimously approved a meaningless, nonbinding resolution - recognizing Palestinian independence, a measure with no teeth.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras lied, saying formal recognition will follow later at an "appropriate" date - rhetorical posturing as a gesture to his visiting guest.

On Monday, Abbas arrived for a two day visit. He'll address Greece's parliament later on Tuesday as this is written.

Last week, Greek Foreign Affairs Committee members unanimously approved a symbolic motion, recognizing Palestinian statehood. Parliamentary approval followed.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely blasted the move, saying it "leads nowhere." It has "no practical significance."

Various European countries rhetorically recognize Palestinian statehood - enacting nothing to make it legally binding, rendering measures approved virtually worthless.

Palestine long ago should have become a full UN member, its sovereign independence recognized - impossible without world community pressure with teeth to end occupation once and for all, designating all land within pre-1967 borders the State of Palestine, Israel having no say on the matter.

Raising the Palestinian flag in front of UN headquarters for the first time last September insults millions of disenfranchised  Palestinians worldwide - represented symbolically in lieu of actual statehood, no different from all other UN members.

Nothing in prospect suggests long denied justice will change. The power of Israel and its lobby in Washington assures continued status quo harshness - denying an entire population its fundamental sovereign rights.
